Batman/Superman Cover Art Shows Off DC World’s Finest Sidekicks

DC’s finest sidekicks are being celebrated with a variant cover that potentially previews the contents of an upcoming Batman/Superman issue.

DC Comics will be highlighting its sidekicks in a brand new variant cover for the upcoming issue of Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #7. The foundation of DC Comics and its lore has especially rested on the shoulders of the sidekicks, more than even the main heroes. After all, Dick Grayson’s Robin is often cited as the first traditional comic book sidekick, or at the very least created the basic template for what sidekicks should look like.

Both Superman and Batman are prime examples of heroes defined by their sidekicks as much as DC itself has been defined by sidekicks. Superman’s circle is largely comprised of allies like his son Jon, his clone Kon-El, cousin Kara, best friend Jimmy Olsen, and even his dog, Krypto. Meanwhile, Batman has enough sidekicks to comprise an entire Bat Family. Sidekicks have become so commonplace in the DC Universe especially now that it may be easy for some audiences to forget just how important they are in building the lore and growth of DC from the ground up.

Artist Todd Nauck looks to highlight the significance of sidekicks with his new variant cover art for Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #7, posted to Twitter. Without its title characters or any of DC’s usual headliners in tow, the cover instead puts all of Batman and Superman’s most notable sidekicks front and center in one big showcase. Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #7 by writer Mark Waid and artist Dan Mora will be hitting comic book shelves and digital stores officially on September 20th.

As of this writing, only four issues of Batman/Superman: World’s Finest have been released, so not much is known about the story for this issue now. However, it has been reported that the issue will show an earlier portion of Superman’s life, showcasing a secret sidekick that no one knew about until now.

All things considered, it seems as though this issue will ultimately deepen the lore of sidekicks in the world of DC even further than it already is. Hence why it is so apropos for artist Todd Nauck to create a variant cover that basically serves as a celebration of DC Comics’ best sidekicks. It is even more apropos that in the middle of it all leading the charge is the character who started the template for how a common sidekick should function: the former Robin, Dick Grayson, now Nightwing. Stay tuned for more of DC’s finest sidekicks in Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #7, available in local comic book shops and digital stores starting on September 20.
