BC Ferries cancels route for long weekend due to mechanical issues

BC Ferries has canceled a number of sailings between Horseshoe Bay and Departure Bay in Nanaimo for the busy long weekend due to a mechanical problem on the Queen of Alberni ferry.

The company says the vessel will be out of service Thursday and possibly Friday to make repairs to the main engine’s cylinder head and liner.

The following sailings on the Queen of Alberni have been canceled on Thursday:

• 07:40 from the departure bay
• 10am from Horseshoe Bay
• 10am from Horseshoe Bay
• 12:25 PM from departure bay
• 2:45 PM from Horseshoe Bay
• 5.00 pm from the departure bay
• 7:20 PM from Horseshoe Bay
• 9.30 pm from the departure bay
• 11:40 PM from Horseshoe Bay

Other sailings on this route are expected to continue as scheduled.

BC Ferries say the repairs are significant meaning Friday sailings could also be affected. If July 1 sailings are canceled, the company says it will notify customers.

Travelers are encouraged to take an alternate service between Vancouver Island and Metro Vancouver on the following routes:

Vancouver (Tsawwassen) – Victoria (Swartz Bay)
Vancouver (Tsawwassen) – Duke Point (Nanaimo)
