Calgary fire determines cause of fatal explosion at seniors home

Emergency crews were called to a nursing home on SE 6th Avenue near SE 9th Street around 3:45 p.m. on July 19th.

A fire department spokesman said they received a report of an explosion on the fourth floor of the seven-story home. The blast triggered fire alarms in the building, leading to the evacuation of most residents and several calls to 911.

Investigators say the fire started on the stove when cooking oil reached ignition temperature. The fire spread to other parts of the kitchen, filling it with thick smoke. A broken window allowed air in, leading to the explosion.

Officials said there were no working fire alarms in the suite.

“This was an extremely tragic situation that has had an impact on the residents of her building, particularly her neighbours on the same floor, who attempted to help under extremely difficult and dangerous circumstances,” the CFD release said.

Officials said one person in an adjacent unit was taken to hospital after the explosion, but no other injuries were reported.

All residents were allowed to return to their rooms the same day.

The CFD has completed its investigation into the fire and has offered some hints on how to respond. People can prevent kitchen fires.
