Dakota Johnson Says Fifty Shades of Gray Harms Author’s Behavior in Movie

Dakota Johnson has opened up about her time working on the Fifty Shades of grey movies.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, the actor revealed that the Fifty Shades of grey The adaptation she signed on for was not the one that ended up being made. “I’m a sexual person, and when I’m interested in something, I want to know so much about it,” she explained. “That’s why I made those big nude movies. I signed up to do a very different version of the movie we ended up making.” Pressing further, the actor added that while the studio and directors were part of the issue, it was fifty shades author EL James who ended up causing the most trouble.

“She had a lot of creative control, all day, every day, and she just demanded certain things happen,” continued Johnson, who signed a three-picture deal to play Anastasia Steele in the fifty shades trilogy in 2013. “There were parts of the books that just wouldn’t work in a movie, like the inner monologue, which was incredibly cheesy at times. It wouldn’t work to say it out loud. It was always a struggle. Always.”

Johnson said the reason she hadn’t talked about her struggles filming the… fifty shades movies until now was “because you want to promote a movie the right way, and I’m proud of what we’ve finally made and everything is as it should be, but it was tough.” The actor added that while she has no regrets about making the films, she wishes she had known what she was signing up for. “If I had known then that it would be, no one would have done it,” she said. “It would have been like, ‘Oh, this is psychotic.’ But no, I don’t regret it.”
