Donald Trump Reveals Threat He Used to Close Taliban Deal

Former President Donald Trump said he struck a deal with the Taliban by personally threatening the Taliban leader.

In part two of his sit-down interview with Fox News Channel’s Sean Hannity, Mr. Trump criticized President Biden’s oversight of the US withdrawal from Afghanistan, which Mr. Trump had negotiated.

But the 2024 Republican presidential frontrunner suggested that the chaotic evacuation and death of 13 US servicemen happened because the Taliban respected him, but not Mr Biden.

In March 2020, Mr. Trump spoke for 35 minutes with Taliban deputy leader Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar.

Mr. Hannity said in the interview aired Thursday night on “Hannity” that the former president had previously told him that he had told the mullah “that you would erase him in no uncertain terms if he didn’t see every dotted I, crossed T , comma, dot’ of any deal.

Not quite, Mr Trump objected.

“No, I sent him a picture of his house,” he said with a smile.

‘He said, ‘But why, but why are you sending me a picture of my house?’ I told you to invent it,” Mr. Trump said. “I said if you do something, we’ll hit you harder than any other country has ever been hit.”

That changed everything, Mr Trump said.

‘He said, ‘I understand, Your Excellency.’ He called me ‘Excellent’. I don’t know if he mentions Biden,” Trump said with a sense of satisfaction.

He later explained that he could imagine the Taliban’s disbelief over the details of Mr Biden’s actual withdrawal, who Mr Trump operationally criticized for, among other things, not being the last to withdraw the military.

The Taliban “respected us. They were afraid of us, they respected us,” Trump said.

He also defended the fact that he made a personal phone call with a Taliban mullah, which was previously noted as “unthinkable” in media reports.

“I got a lot of warmth when I spoke to him. It was a rough conversation, but towards the end it became kinder to be honest with you because they would do what I said.

“But the media said, ‘Why is he calling this person?’ I called this person because that’s where the action is,” Trump said.
