Downtown Books Hosts Autograph Session for Parker’s ‘Our Family, Its History, Their Boats: Six Generations of Boat Builders in Dare County’

“Our Family, History, Their Boats: Six Generations of Boatbuilders in Dare County” by Manteo-born LeVern Davis Parker. [Submitted]

Downtown Books is celebrating the first Friday of October this week with a book signing with Manteo native LeVern Davis Parker who recently published the beautiful hardcover Our family, the history, their boats: six generations of boat builders in Dare County.

Parker’s family ties in boat building can be traced back to her great-great-grandfather, George Washington Creef, Sr., who made the “shad boat” he built to maneuver in the shallow waters of Roanoke Island. In 1987, this boat became North Carolina’s official historic state boat.

Throughout the book, she introduces the reader through words and pictures to boat builders, Manteo’s history, boat racing and her family. There is a lot of local interest in her book and many copies are bought for holiday gifts.

LeVern will greet friends, talk to boats and sign books on First Friday, October 7 from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM at Downtown Books, 103 Sir Walter Raleigh Street, Manteo.

Downtown Books is the independent bookstore on Roanoke Island serving the entire Outer Banks and has been voted Best Bookstore on the Beach three years in a row. To reserve a copy of LeVern’s book or for more information call 252-473-1056.
