Dr. Donald Klein revealed that he is the father of more than 50 children in a Netflix documentary

Donald Klein, a retired American fertility doctor, has impregnated countless patients with his own sperm without their knowledge or consent.

Avana, available on Netflix as of Wednesday, tells the story of Jacoba Ballard. Realizing that she had become pregnant using a donor, in 2014 she undertook an at-home DNA test to find her biological relatives.

I was surprised to learn that she has seven half-sisters – a number that defies best practice in fertility medicine. This proved to be just the tip of the iceberg.

Subsequent DNA matches led the group to discover the sickening truth about their parents’ trusted doctor. Klein is now known to have fathered at least 50 children by women he treated at his clinic in Indianapolis, Indiana, during the 1970s and 1980s.

“Just as Ballard and her new siblings realize they are barely beginning to untangle his dark web of deceit, their quest for justice lies at the heart of this deeply disturbing story about an unimaginable breach of trust,” says Netflix’s description of the documentary.

Where is Dr. Donald Klein now?

Klein assumed a low profile after his actions were revealed but it is understood that he is still alive and living in Indiana. Retired from practice in 2009.

Under state and federal law at the time, Klein’s behavior was not considered a criminal offense, and so his victims have thus far struggled to achieve what they see as adequate legal justice. In 2017, he lost his medical license and was given a one-year suspended prison sentence and a $500 (£400) fine for obstructing justice by denying the allegations.

Our Father is now streaming on Netflix. Runtime: 1 hour 37 minutes. Age rating: 15.
