Ford warns teachers to return to school in the fall as contract talks loom

Prime Minister Doug Ford says he will negotiate fairly with county teachers, but warns students must be at school by the fall.

Ford says the county will give more than a one percent pay increase to teachers whose contracts expire on Aug. 31.

The prime minister says extracurricular activities should also be available to students in September.

Those activities have been halted in the past when teachers work to govern.

Four of the five major education unions have already taken the first step to negotiate by sending a letter of intent to the province.

Progressive conservatives have had a bad relationship with unions for the past four years, with teachers organizing several strikes and ‘work-to-rule’ campaigns during the latest round of negotiations.
