Funnel cloud spotted south of Edmonton

Thunderstorms over the Leduc area created a small funnel cloud on Wednesday evening.

Given the setup of the atmosphere, it’s possible we’ll see a few more before the evening is over.

Weak rotation under the thunderstorms can be drawn into the storms and produce funnels, which usually pose no real threat to touch and cause damage. However, there is always a chance from the outside that the rotation will get strong enough to produce a weak landspout tornado.

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a “Weather Advisory” regarding funnel clouds for the following areas:

  • Leduc-Camrose-Wetaskiwin
  • Red deer-Ponoka-Innisfail-Stettler
