HUMPHRIES, Maurice William Gerard – Obituary – Sault Ste. Marie

It is with heartfelt sadness that the family of Maurice announces his sudden passing at the Sault Area Hospital on Sunday, June 19, 2022 at the age of 64.

He will be dearly missed by his beloved wife of 44 years, Donna. Cherished father of Vanessa Boyle (Dan) and Ryan (Rebecca). Proud grandfather of Lillyanna, Ethan, Ivan Boyle and Jonathan Humphries who all affectionately called him “Moe”. Son of the late Maurice and Marita Humphries and son-in-law of the late Jack and Dorothy Boldirev. He also leaves behind sister Rosemary Vernile (Vince) and many nieces and nephews.

Maurice worked the majority of his life on the railroad with a career spanning many years as a conductor and later an R.C.O. It brought him out west to Alberta and then back to the Sault where he retired last year from Algoma Steel. His biggest passion in life was sport and in his youth played football, hockey and baseball with great ability. Growing older he became an avid sports fan and developed a lifelong obsession with the Chicago Blackhawks. Dedication to the team saw him amass a large collection of memorabilia and hockey knowledge which was a source of immense pride. Moe could be a man of few words unless there was a bad call or missed chance in a tight game. We will cherish many memories shared watching games and passing his love of the Hawks onto the next generation. His stubbornness was legendary and we can truly say that he forged a life on his own terms. He wouldn’t allow anyone to fuss over him and constantly reminded you to worry about yourself: he is fine! So in our grief we take a bit of comfort imagining him somewhere with all the simple things he so enjoyed in life. A lit cigarette, hot coffee or cold beer and an old western or the hockey game on. Rest easy, we love you and will miss you always.

A private family ceremony was held at the Arthur Funeral Home – Barton & Kiteley Chapel (492 Wellington St. E. 705-759-2522).  In lieu of flowers, we suggest a donation (payable by cheque or online) in Maurice’s memory to Jumpstart. The foundation helps kids overcome financial and accessibility barriers to sport and recreation in an effort to provide inclusive play for children of all abilities.  Please visit www.arthurfuneralhome.com to leave a message of condolence as a keepsake for the family.
