Joe Biden: Supreme Court ruling on Roe ‘destabilizing’, US still leading

MADRID (AP) — President Biden said the Supreme Court’s decision to end the constitutional right to abortion is “destabilizing” but it will not affect the US’s position on the world stage as he took credit for modernizing the transatlantic alliance to adapt to new threats from Russia and China.

Biden spoke to reporters at the end of a five-day overseas trip to huddle with NATO allies in Madrid and the leaders of the Group of Seven Advanced Democratic Economies in the Bavarian Alps, which came as the country was still grappling with the fallout from the Friday’s Supreme Court ruling.

“America is better positioned to lead the world than we’ve ever been,” Biden said. “But one thing that has been destabilizing has been the excessive conduct of the United States Supreme Court in not only setting aside Roe v. Wade, but essentially challenging the right to privacy.”

He added, “I could understand why the American people are frustrated because of what the Supreme Court has done.”

The three-day summit included the Biden administration’s announcement of plans to permanently strengthen the US military presence in Europe, an agreement between Turkey, Finland and Sweden to pave the way for the accession of Nordic countries to NATO, and the alliance updating its strategic concept. that China’s “coercive policy” poses a challenge to the interests of the western bloc.

“I think we can all agree that this has been a historic NATO summit,” Biden told reporters at a closing news conference.

Biden noted that the last time NATO updated its strategic concept 12 years ago, Russia was characterized as a partner, and the document didn’t even mention China. The new document issued at the summit changes that.

“The world has changed, a lot has changed since then,” Biden said. “This summit was about strengthening our alliances, meeting the challenges of our world as it is and the threats we will face in the future,” Biden said.
