Major hospital announcement today with Grand River, St. Mary’s General

Major announcements from leaders of Grand River Hospital and St. Mary’s General Hospital are expected Monday afternoon.

Details of the announcement are being kept closely guarded, but Premier Doug Ford may have let the secrets out early.

Speaking at a funding announcement in Kitchener on Monday, Ford said he would be at the hospital launch today to provide more details about the new facility.

“We’re investing more than $50 billion in more than 50 new hospital projects across Ontario (…) the new Waterloo Region Hospital is one of them,” Ford said. “In fact, I will be announcing a new site for that hospital with local officials later today.”

Leaders of the combined hospitals have promised for months that they would soon reveal the location of the new hospital in Waterloo Region.

The lengthy process to select the site was narrowed down to two finalists in May.

But those locations were not made public, in part to protect the integrity of the decision-making process and to prevent a flurry of real estate deals around locations that might not be selected.

Former Kitchener mayor Carl Zehr will serve as chairman of the selection committee.

Phase one of the process determined how many of the five total applications met minimum criteria, while phase two involved panelists evaluating three sites in more detail.

CityNews 570 will have extensive coverage of this announcement and how it will impact Waterloo Region.
