Manchester United target Antony tells Ajax he won’t return until August

Manchester United transfer target Antony has told Ajax he will not be returning to the club until August, reports ESPN.

Antony says he is suffering complications from his ankle injury and will not return for early pre-season.

This comes amid Ajax setting a staggering £69 million price tag on him, The Times reports, with the newspaper also claiming he is ‘determined’ to join Manchester United.

The Telegraph report Antony is frustrated by Ajax’s high price tag, feeling it is ‘disproportionate’.

Antony tells Ajax he won’t return until August

New Ajax manager Alfred Schreuder confirmed the news Antony won’t be joining up with Ajax’s initial pre-season preparations.

The winger has not played since suffering an ankle injury for Brazil against Bolivia.

Schreuder told ESPN : “Antony is recovering from his injury in Amsterdam. He is doing reasonably well, but the coming weeks are important.

“We hope that he will improve quickly before his injury. I assume that he will be fit again at the end of the preparation.”

It is natural to look at Antony’s situation with suspicion. Amid reports of his frustration this week, The Telegraph even highlighted how a former Ajax player Davinson Sanchez went on strike to successfully force a move.

This is one option available to Antony, and his injury will keep Ajax guessing, and leave him with a big decision to make over his future in August.

Manchester United have identified Antony as a ‘key target’ The Times reports, but The Telegraph report United don’t want to pay more than 50 million Euros (£43 million).

Erik ten Hag signed Antony for Ajax and Goal has reported he is keen to be reunited with Ten Hag.

If the extent of his injury is genuine, then United may have additional doubts over paying an extortionate price for him.
