An immigration raid on a builders merchant in Small Heath saw nine people arrested for ‘working illegally’. An intelligence led enforcement visit was carried out at Cambabest Builders Merchant in Venetia Road on Wednesday morning (22 June).
Immigration enforcement officers gained entry through a warrant after understanding there were individuals without the right to be in the UK. Officers discovered eight Indian nationals and one Romanian national who were found working at the site.
One Indian national and the one Romanian national were detained and dealt with according to immigration rules. The rest were granted immigration bail waiting for a resolution of their individual immigration cases.
The Small Heath and Highgate Police Team assisted with road closures saying on social media: “@SmallHeathWMP have assisted the immigration service today with an operation in the small heath area of Birmingham. 9 arrests made and several others under investigation.”
The owner of the builders merchant was served with a referral notice for maximum potential fine of £180,000.
A Home Office spokesperson said: “The government is tackling illegal immigration and the harm it causes by removing those with no right to be in the UK.
“We continue to work with law enforcement agencies to tackle illegal migration in all its forms. Our New Plan for Immigration will fix the broken system; making it fair to those in genuine need and firm on those who seek to abuse it.”
Cambabest declined to comment.
