Occupation police assault the funeral of the murdered Palestinian journalist

JERUSALEM – Israeli police officers on Friday assaulted mourners at the funeral of a prominent Palestinian journalist killed this week in the occupied West Bank, forcing coffin-bearers to throw the coffin.

video Policemen in Jerusalem were shown beating and kicking mourners next to the coffin containing the body of journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, forcing him to the ground and carrying the coffin backwards. Many around them waved Palestinian flags.

The Israeli police said in a statement that they were “forced to act” during the funeral because “rioters began throwing stones at the police” and some mourners were chanting “national incitement”.

Ms. Abu Akleh, a prominent Palestinian-American journalist, was shot dead Wednesday morning in the occupied West Bank during an Israeli raid on the city of Jenin. Witnesses said an Israeli soldier killed her.

On Friday, the Israeli military said that while Ms. Abu Okla may have been mistakenly killed by Israeli fire, its initial investigation indicated that she may have been shot by an armed Palestinian.

This is an evolving story.
