A woman has died in hospital after being struck by a motorist in downtown Toronto late Thursday afternoon.

The crash happened near Queen and Sackville streets in the Corktown neighbourhood, and Toronto police said they were called to the scene at 5:50 p.m.

“A pedestrian was crossing Queen Street from the north to the south side. A vehicle approached the crosswalk and failed to stop as the pedestrian was crossing, striking the pedestrian,” Detective Inspector Geoff Bassingthwaighte, who was on duty, said.

Mr Bassingthwaighte said the pedestrian suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to a trauma centre where he was pronounced dead.

The driver remained at the scene, police said. Asked whether alcohol played a role in the crash, Bassingthwaighte said traffic investigators were “looking at all factors.”

“This investigation is very complex,” he said, “We ask that anyone who has dash cam video or surveillance camera video in the area between approximately 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. contact Traffic Services at 416-808-1900 or Crime Stoppers.”
