Rock the South started small in 2012, with a one-day lineup at Cullman’s Heritage Park featuring Dierks Bentley, Kellie Pickler, Brent Cobb and Jon Pardi.

The festival changed significantly in 2013, when the new team of organizers replaced the city of Cullman and its parks division. Sara Evans and Jay Barker co-owned the festival from 2013 to 2015, along with Cullman’s concert promoter Shane Quick of Premier Productions. The couple split from the festival in 2016, but Quick continued as owner and key organizer, along with Nathan Baugh of 46 Entertainment.

Rock the South moved from Heritage Park to York Farms in 2019, expanding its footprint to approximately 140 acres. The festival had some growing pains in 2019 with the arrival of a new location. The move to the Cullman County 469 area caused lengthy traffic congestion, delays and frustration for fans on the roads leading to the festival.

The new location was intended to accommodate growing crowds — more than 65,000 people were expected in 2019, organizers said — and to allow for camping, RV parking and more on-site parking. The organizers promised to listen to complaints, improve the flow and make the festival goers better.

The festival was canceled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, but returned for its ninth year in 2021. Rock the South presented its 10th festival in 2022.

Despite its name, the festival leans towards bro-country and country pop, mixed with some traditional country and southern rock.
