Two arrested after seizing smuggled tobacco in Deer Lake

Two men have been arrested in what RCMP is billing as a significant seizure of smuggled tobacco after they ran over a vehicle in Deer Lake on Tuesday.

A 22-year-old from Gambo and a 55-year-old from Cormack have been released to appear in court later.

As part of an ongoing investigation by the RCMP Federal Serious and Organized Crime Unit in Gander, RCMP stopped a truck towing a 15-foot trailer. Officers found 7,500 boxes of smuggled tobacco, 100 boxes of illegal cigars, a small amount of marijuana and some Canadian currency.

A box of smuggled tobacco currently sells for between $55 and $60, bringing the total street value of the seized tobacco to $425,000. That would mean a loss of about $1.65 million to the government treasury of Newfoundland and Labrador.
