Netflix’s Umbrella Academy hit the streamer today with his third seasonunfolds more time travel issues and (in a new twist!) interdimensional quarrels for super-driven Hargreeves siblings. But an important part of season three both happened on screen and backstage.
By the end of 2020, there were more months after season two dropped, Umbrella Academy star Elliot Page came out as trans in an open letter shared on his social media accounts. It sounded in part “I feel an overwhelming gratitude for the incredible people who have supported me on this journey. I can not begin to express how remarkable it finally feels to love it, I am enough to pursue my authentic self. “Fortunately, the supportive people very included the team behind popular Netflix series.
In March this year got fans a first look at Page in character as Viktor Hargreeves, whose own transgender identity is part of the show’s new story. THe Hargreeves siblings do not always get along – even when the fate of the world is at stake – fut they immediately accept Viktor for who he is. According to Umbrella Academy series creator Steve Blackman, the scripts for season three were already finished when Page came out, but there was no hesitation when it came to making some timely rewriting with the help of both Page and transgender author Thomas Page McBee. Talking to TV LineBlackman explained, “We wanted to tell a story that was really pro-trans, authentic, sensitive and show that families able to accept transgender people in their lives and it does not have to be a negative thing as it is often portrayed in the media … I’m really proud of how we did it. I thought it was expressed in a way that we all felt good about. “
Umbrella Academy season three is now streamed on Netflix.
