Zidane Iqbal signs new Manchester United contract

Zidane Iqbal has signed a new contract with Manchester United six months after making his debut.

Iqbal, 19, came on against Young Boys in the Champions League group stage in December and was also drafted into Erik ten Hag’s maiden training squad on Monday.

Manchester-born Iqbal was called up to the Iraq national team earlier this year and has attained two caps.

United are expected to announce another academy contract renewal ahead of the start of their pre-season friendly schedule. The Under-21s have already arranged games against Kidderminster Harriers and Altrincham under new coaches Mark Dempsey and Paul McShane.

Alejandro Garnacho is also in discussions about an improved deal even though he is contracted to United until 2025. Garnacho scored seven goals in six games during United’s triumphant FA Youth Cup campaign and debuted for the first-team in April.

Iqbal signed his first professional contract in April of last year and started 16 times for the Under-23s last season, scoring twice.

Former United manager Ralf Rangnick was prepared to include Iqbal in the first-team squad against Brentford in December following a Covid-19 outbreak in the squad but the fixture was postponed.

Iqbal was one of 18 academy members who trained under Ten Hag at Carrington on Monday.
